If you can be claimed as a dependent on your parents’ return, you can still file your own return so that you can receive a refund of taxes withheld.Your W-2 will show federal tax withheld in box 2, and state tax withheld in box 17.(You will not get back anything for Social Security or Medicare withheld.) Be sure that on your own return you say that you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return.
It might not be all about if you "have" to file---it might be if you want to file. Do you have a W-2 with federal or state tax withheld in box 2 or box 17? You can file a tax return to seek a refund of that money. If nothing was withheld, then you are not required to file unless you have more than $14,600 in box 1 of a W-2.
But if you have self-employment income of even as much as $400, you are required to file and pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare. Self-employment jobs could include babysitting, mowing grass, delivering for DoorDash, Instacart, Grub Hub, etc.
