Below are the rules to qualify for several tax credits. Depending on which credit you're referring to, go back through your answers to the TurboTax questions and make sure you've answered the questions correctly:
For the Child Tax Credit, your daughter must:
- be claimed as your dependent
- be under the age of 17 as of December 31
- have lived with you over half the year in the US (unless you're the noncustodial parent)
- be a US citizen, resident, or national with a valid SSN
- not have provided more than half of her own support
- not be married and filing a joint return
For the Earned Income Tax Credit, your daughter must:
- be under the age of 19 (or 24 if a full time student)
- have lived with you over half the year in the US
- not be married and filing a joint return
- be a US citizen, resident, or national with a valid SSN
- be under the age of 13 when the care was provided (partial credit for year she turns 13)
- have lived with you over half the year in the US
If you received tax free dependent care benefits from your employer in excess of $3,000, you would not be able to claim the child care credit.
