Question

Are state and federal taxes exempt for military wages? Son only received W-2 from Dfasin/Jarea but is being charged taxes for both federal and state?

Military pay is not exempt from federal tax.

Military pay may be exempt from state tax, depending on your son's Home of Record for military pay purposes (usually where he lived when he entered the service).

His military pay is not subject to tax by the state where he is stationed, only his HOR state (also referred to as his "state of legal residence").
