If you received a Form 1099-R from DFAS it is for pension income.
To enter, edit or delete a form 1099-R -
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business) Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business) Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown) Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button
Or enter1099-rin theSearchbox located in the upper right of the program screen. Click onJump to 1099-R
On the screenDid you get a 1099-R in 2023?Click on Yes
On the next screen click on Continue
On the screenLet's import your tax infoClick onChange how I enter my form
On the screenHow do you want to add your 1099‑R?Click onType it in myself
On the screenWho gave you a 1099-R?select the type of 1099-R you received and Continue
IF the DFAS 1099-R was for a person's military service (usually 20 yrs or longer, unless medically discharged).
Then Yes, it is considered a Military Pension....even if a surviving spouse is getting it after the original recipient's death.
In general, it doesn't make a difference on a federal tax return, but some states exempt those $$ form state taxes if the pension is a Military pension from DFAS.
