Question

How do I claim a 2022 combat zone tax exclusion (from a re-enlistment bonus in a tax-free combat zone) in turbotax?

I re-enlisted in a combat zone/tax-free location and was recently provided with a CZTE (Combat Zone Tax Exclusion) form for the 2022 tax year from my unit to get my taxes back that were taken out. Do I need to amend my 2022 taxes, or can I claim those taxes back on my 2024 taxes?

Any form of pay earned while on deployment in a combat zone is excluded from federal income tax. This translates to a significant tax savings for the active service member in combat and his family back home.

You'll need to amend your 2022 tax return to exclude that amount from your taxable income.

Please read this TurboTax Help topic on how to amend a prior-year tax return.

Gotcha. Thanks for the response. What section (wages & income, deductions & credits) and sub-section in TurboTax do I go to when amending the 2022 taxes to add this information?

On your amended return, you'll restate your W-2 income to exclude your combat pay.
