I am active duty military stationed in Washington. When I went home to visit family in California, I bought a new car in California. How do I claim it on my Tax Return?

My home of record is California. I am currently stationed in Washington state. I went back to visit family in California and while I was there, I bought a brand new car. I am trying to figure out how to claim it on the return. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can claim the sales tax and registration fees on your Schedule A, itemized deductions.

In order to prepare a Schedule A, you will need to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe, which will lead you through all potential deductions including qualifying medical expenses and mortgage interest.

If your new car is the only major purchase you made, and you don't own a home, you are likely be better to off using the Free Edition and taking the standard deduction ($6,350 for single and $12,700 for married).
