Question

I joined the military last year and was in California for around 5 months for training, do I need to file California state taxes?

It depends.

If you were a nonresident of California when you entered the military, and you were stationed in California on PCS orders, you would still be considered a nonresident for California income tax purposes.

Assuming you had no other income from California sources, you would not be taxed on your pay for military services while in California.

If you had other income in California, then you would need to file a nonresident CA return.
