Question

I'm military, and I believed filing was a free service for military, yet I paid? Did it change or did I miss something? Thanks.

To receive your military discount you would have needed to sign in and start your return from the TurboTax military discount site. You appear to be reaching out via TurboTax Self Employed which would not be free, however, a discount of $5.00 or more would be applied.

Here is a breakdown of the available discounts:

E-1 through E-5 can receive the following:

  • Free federal and state filing with Free Edition or Deluxe or
  • $5 off discount or more for Premier, Self-Employed, and TurboTax Live federal products

E-6 and above can receive a $5 off discount or more on all TurboTax federal products.

Please see the below TurboTax FAQ for more information:

I clicked the link TurboTax sent. I've filed as military for free for 5 years now. I don't see why they would send me a link to a paid service...fully aware of my past filings. I also clicked the free options and skipped the paid ads several times. So, now, I have to pay $160 for something that is supposed to be free to me? Or will TurboTax do the right thing and refund me?
