i need to file two different state but i have no idea how

first i am big idiot with this, i need help
I was in Mississippi as a AIT and now i am stationed in New Mexico state. Do i add up pays that i got in Mississippi time period and put it on MS state income and New Mexico as well in there?

Also if above is right, which pay do i add total? is it adding up all the net amount pay (i have no idea which one to add this too)??

Yes, you need help with that. You don't put in NM, and you need to make sure you use only your Military W-2 to get those entries correct.....DO NOT use your LES. MS would be the correct state (for the entire year), only if you signed up in MS as a resident of MS.

What state did you live in when you enlisted? That state is your Home of Record (HOR) and your State of Legal Residence (SLR). no matter where you are assigned/posted while you are in the military.

You only pay taxes to your HOR/SLR (if that state taxes military pay) until you have left service. You only pay non-resident taxes to the sate you are posted in, but only IF you happen to work a civilian job in that state while off duty.

In the Personal Info section, you edit yoru name and indicate yoru state of residence as yoru original HOR state....and, you do not say that you moved to/from any other state during the year. For State tax purposes, you remain in hour HOR state the entire time. (down in the Mailing Address, that can be your current state where you are posted since that does not affect the state of taxation).

Many posts have on-site tax preparation services for their military people...you may need to check into that and not try to do it yourself for a year or two until you get comfortable with the special tax processes for active duty Military people.

Usually, a military members HOR and SLR are the same state, BUT occasionally long-term military folks change their SLR for state tax purposes using a specially-prepared DD Form 2058 when they get posted to a state that they really like, and then use the new SLR state as their state of residence and are taxed according to that state''s rules ever after.... but from your post, you are unlikely to have ever done that yet as it does take a conscious decision to do that, and considerable effort and legwork on your part.
