Question

In the Michigan National Guard we don't pay state taxes. Every year I've gotten a return. This year in my w2 I owe state taxes which is a first for me. Is this a mistake?

Make sure that at the beginning of the TurboTax interview you have marked that you are Active Duty military.  Then, on the W2 screen, you need to mark that it is Active Duty pay, which is on the screen after you have entered the main W-2 information.  It is the first option at the top of the screen.  These are the two options you must select for Michigan to exempt your National Guard Wages from your income.  I can't guarantee that this leads to a refund, but it will at the least reduce what you owe, and could lead to a refund.
