Question

Maryland state $1500 military retirement reduction

My spouse and I are both military retirees.  Maryland allows the first $15,000 retired pay for each to be exempt from MD state income tax.  I saw somewhere that I need to mark our 1099-Rs as active duty retired pay but can't figure out how to do that.

I also don't know how to get to the pension exclusion worksheet to compute whether part of our social security qualifies as a reduction.

Please follow these steps to mark your retirement as military retirement:

    1. Login to your TurboTax Account
    2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “1099-R”
    3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
    4. Enter you 1099-R information
    5. On the "Where is your distribution from?" screen select "Active or reserve military retirement"

TurboTax will calculate automatically what part of your social security qualifies as a reduction.

Please see Where do I enter an SSA-1099.
