Military spouse paying the wrong state taxes

Should have been exempt from state taxes so I can pay Colorado, rather than California. However, employee forgot to check the box to exempt this. They told me I do not need a W2c, and can mark exempt and get a refund on turbo tax.

This happens with military spouses ALL the time.  Make sure the employer corrects it for next year.

Technically you should get a W-2C, but you can mark it as exempt yourself if the previous year you did not owe any taxes to California.

You will need to do a Non-Resident CA state return.  File it Married Filing Joint if you want because all of your Husband's income in CA should be exempt if he was there subject to orders.

Do the Non-Resident return first and then your state of residency second.
