Question

My husband is military and neither of us earn income from the state of Mississippi, although we're stationed here. Why does it say every year that we owe state taxes?

This has happened before and I know it's a small detail on a form, but I can never remember how to fix it.

Yes, you are correct.   See the following FAQ for state residency rules for active duty military members:  https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3300147.

Double-check your entries in the Personal Info Tab.  Even though you were stationed in Mississippi, answer “no” to the question “Did you live in another state besides [home state]” and “no” to the question “Did you earn money in another state besides [home state]?” Active-duty military are only considered residents of their state of record, not the state of deployment.  If filled out correctly, it should eliminate your tax due to Mississippi.
