I attended & graduated medical school in westcoast from Jan to June 2024.  Got a Medical Residency job for 2 years and worked in East coast from July to Dec 2024.  The Medical Residency in East Coast state has State Income Tax but the previous West Coast state does not have State Income Tax.

When filing 2024 Income Tax using Turbo Tax under "State of Residence" do I put down = Eastcoast State or West Coast State?

xx Lives in another state in2024  = Yes

Previous State of Residence (State where you lived before moving) = do I put downEastcoast State or West Coast State?

Date you become residence of new state = 07/01/2024

I'm planning to go back to my Westcoast state after my 2 years of Medical Residency in West Coast State.

For state of residency, you will select NC and for previous state select WA.  Since you will be in NC for more than 12 months, NC will consider you a resident of the state.  For 2024, you would only be a part year resident.

In your situation, it is not going to make much of a difference on your return.  Regardless of your residency status, since you are earning the money in NC, you would have to pay taxes on it.  Since your "home state" does not have any income tax, you will not have to include your NC income on another return.

Are you maintaining a home on the West Coast?  Do you have a place to go back to or you are just planning to go back?

If you do not, then you are not considered to be just temporarily in the East coast state.

When you are filing, you will enter your current state as your state of residence.  So if you became a resident of the east coast state on 7/1/2024, then you would file a part year resident return for your current state including only the income that you earned while a resident of that state.  Since your old state does not have an income tax, you will only need to file one part year resident return.
