Military retirees and annuitants receive a Form 1099-R either electronically via myPay or as a paper copy in the mail each year.

When you have your Form 1099-R, follow these steps to enter into TurboTax:

  • Sign in to your TurboTax account
  • Click on Federal Taxes tab
  • Click on Wages & Income tab
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • Click Show more and click Start next to IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
  • IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)

Once you enter your 1099-R from your military pension, make sure you continue to answer questions through all the follow up screens.  They will ensure your military pension is reported correctly and carried over to any state return correctly.

Note:  Military pensions are considered non-qualified plans.
