You will have to explain in more detail.

What TurboTax program did you use to create the tax return?  Online web based editions?  Desktop software installed on your personal computer?

What tax year?

An tax return created, completed and filed using the TurboTax online editions cannot be deleted once it has been filed.

Or paid for in the online version.  Could you maybe have another account?  That's common.

While working on my 2020 taxes, I somehow deleted my 2019 Amended Return.  The return was prepared using the 2019 Turbotax Deluxe on a Mac.  How can I recover a deleted tax return?

January 11, 2021

Have you checked your trash files? If the file is in your trash you can restore:

  • Open trash (left-click on the trash icon) and drag the files from the trash to your Desktop or other desired location.
  • OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the trash -press COMMAND-Z.

If you already cleaned your trash items or if it is set to auto permanently delete trash items, there are Time Machines on the Mac that can help recover lost files. These are the steps:

  • On your Mac, click  Time Machine icon > select Enter Time Machine.
  • Click the up arrow on the right side of the Finder window > Swipe down the backup file on your Mac to find the deleted file.
  • Press and hold Commands and select the file you want to restore > click Restore to restore the files on your Macintosh to the current Finder > open it and save it to a different location.

Are you using the Desktop program?  Windows or Mac?

You need to have the file ending in .tax2019 to transfer in to 2020.  Are you on Windows?  It should be in your Documents then in a Turbo Tax folder.  Or search your whole computer for all files ending in .tax or .tax2019.  And check your Recycle Bin.  Are you on Windows 10?  That can move files to different spots like to One Drive.  Or to Drop Box.  Check your backups.  Could it be under a different user on your computer?

If you don't have the main .tax file you might have one that starts with a Tilde sign ~ like  "~your name.tax2019".  That file is if your computer crashes or your real file gets lost or deleted or corrupt so you can restore it.

Here's an idea.  Do you still have 2019 installed?  Try opening 2019 program and see if you can get your 2019 return to show up in it.  Go to FILE -  OPEN.  See if it is the right one.  Then save it again with a name and place you can find.  Go to File - Save As.

I have routinely used Turbo Tax Deluxe for our taxes.  The computer I used for the last several years crashed in April, 2021.  I cannot find the printed copies of 2019 and 2020 returns.

Help!!!!

@LDE68  Did you use the Desktop CD/Download program?  Then the only copies are on your computer and any backups you made.

You can request a transcript from the IRS

October 28, 2021

If you used desktop software downloaded/installed from a CD to your own computer, then the tax files are stored locally on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.  They are not stored online.  If you cannot recover them due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

Did you e-file your tax return and was it accepted?
Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.

You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large Orange button labeled "Transmit my returns now".

After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.

Note - Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.  Only the taxpayer listed on the tax return can obtain the status of a tax refund or a tax return.

To check the status of an e-filed return, open up your desktop product or log into your TurboTax Online Account. You can find your status within the TurboTax product.
If accepted by the IRS use the federal tax refund website to check the refund status - https://www.irs.gov/refunds
If accepted by the state use this TurboTax support FAQ to check the state tax refund status - https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1899433-how-do-i-track-my-state-refund

After the tax return has been Accepted by the IRS (meaning only that they received the return) it will be in the Processing mode until the tax refund has been Approved and then an Issue Date will be available on the IRS website.
See this IRS website for federal tax refund FAQ's - https://www.irs.gov/refunds/tax-season-refund-frequently-asked-questions

Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.

Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 4 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.

Please remove your email address from your message.  Anyone could scam you saying they are from TurboTax.

Click on the three dots in the upper right of your message and Edit the message.

TurboTax cannot mail or email your tax returns to you.  You can download a PDF of the tax returns yourself.

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

For a fee of $43 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

You can't move programs.  They have to be installed on the new computer.   Did you originally install it from the CD or the download?

My computer crashed in 2021. I lost all my 2020 tax filing documents.  Is that data kept by Turbotax?
